Make sure you know your financial situation are before you file for divorce.

Gather all the information about your assets, debts, pensions and retirement accounts, bank accounts, properties, furniture, jewelry, assets in your safe or deposit and credit cards. A good option is to take photos of all the paintings, furniture or any other relic that may be of value. Obtaining a copy of your credit report is a good way to know which debts are in your name and which ones are not.

If you have assets of sentimental value, consider moving them to a safe place, so that your partner cannot destroy them in revenge after the divorce papers have been served.

If you have separate bank accounts, consider changing your password.
